Marine Appraisals Course offered by American Society of Appraisers (ASA), taught by Basil M Karatzas

Pleased announcing that Basil M Karatzas will be the Instructor of a virtual course on Marine Appraisals offered by the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). The two-hour course, offered virtually as a Webinar, is titled “Current Developments in the Maritime Industry” and it is offered under the Machinery & Technical Specialties (MTS) category of appraisal methodology by ASA.


Marine Appraisals is a critical function when financing, re-financing and leasing transactions are taking place; further, accounting, taxation, portfolio review and performance are also functions in need of accurate appraisals of underlying marine assets. And, “marine assets” is a very broad terms of assets encompassing assets as “humble” as inland hopper barges and as sophisticated as dynamically positioned offshore construction vessels, including new design vessels for the offshore wind industry.


The Course will cover the fundamentals of the appraisal methodology as applied to the marine industry, and it will make an effort to identify and discuss drivers that are cardinal in major asset classes and market segments. The current state of the marine industry will also be discussed during the course, and present values in the marine industry will be framed under a in a business-cycle perspective.


The Target Audience of the course is:


- Asset managers and credit officers for leasing companies, equipment finance companies, etc.

- Investors, lenders, bankers, loan officers.

- Brokers, business brokers, shipbrokers, auctioneers.


The Course qualifies for two (2) hours of Continuing Education credit for ASA credential holders.

Karatzas Marine Advisors & Co has been active in the international maritime industry (tankers, dry bulk, containerships, offshore), in the American maritime industry (inland, coastal, blue-water), offshore (offshore drilling and offshore wind), representing lessors, equipment finance companies, lenders and banks, as well as investors and asset- and ship-owners. Mr Karatzas is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA), a Certified Marine Surveyor (CMS), Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) by AICPA, a Fellow with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) in the UK, holds an MBA from the Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University. Mr Karatzas is also a Harvard Business School (HBS) alumnus having graduated from the Owner President Management Program (OPM51) at Harvard Business School.
