Karatzas Auctions is managed by Karatzas Marine Advisors & Co., the well-established New York-based shipbrokerage, advisory and appraisals firm. Karatzas Auctions and its website provide transactional information on marine assets that Karatzas Marine Advisors & Co have exclusively been mandated to sell / broker / charter / auction; occasionally, info on transactions and assets that Karatzas Marine Advisors & Co are not exclusively mandated may be posted on behalf of selective clients and assets.

 

Karatzas Auctions has successfully handled the sale of purse seiner tuna fishing vessels (judicial sale), coastal and inland tank barges (Jones Act), inland hopper barges (Jones Act), and currently has an array of marine assets from sale, ranging from a sizeable transaction of inland hopper barges to floating drydocks.

 

Karatzas Marine Advisors & Co. was established in 2011 by Mr Basil M Karatzas, a well sought-after author and speaker on marine matters, and with twenty years of commercial maritime expertise, ranging from husbandry agency to port operations to shipbrokerage (S&P) to marine appraisals and leasing and capital raising.

 

Basil has been educated at Harvard Business School (HBS) having finished the Owner President Program (OPM51) and being a active member of the HBS Alumni New York Club. Basil has also studied International Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship at the Jones Graduate School of Management at Rice University in Houston, Texas.  Basil’s undergraduate degree is in Chemistry and Biology.

 

Basil is a member of numerous professional societies, including the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in the UK, the Baltic Exchange in the UK, the American Society of Appraisers (having achieved the prestigious Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) designation), the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) holding the Accredited in Business Valuations (ABV) credential, the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) holding the Certified Marine Surveyor (CMS) qualification,  a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) in the UK; Basil is also a member of several more professional organizations including BIMCO,  the Baltic Exchange, the Harvard Club of New York, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), the Royal Photographic Society, etc

  

Basil serves on the board of several entities, including both publicly listed companies (Toronto Stock Exchange, TSXV) and private for-profit companies; also, he's on the board of non-profit entities, including 501(c)(3) federal tax exemption of nonprofit organizations.

 

Basil has been a sought-after speaker at shipping industry events, and having participated to several shipping conferences, tradeshows and forums. Via Karatzas Marine Advisors & Co, a dedicated annual shipping finance and shipping technology conference has been established in Athens, Greece, currently in its second year, aiming at elevating the state of shipping finance, and facilitating the sourcing of capital for the capital-intensive shipping industry.

 

Basil’s thought leadership has been recognized in the contribution of book chapters on shipping matters, articles and editorials in the business and trade press, and also frequent quotation in the mainstream, international business media, including The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, The New York Times, National Public Radio (NPR), and many more.
